Chrome: the most exposed
Plated products look excellent and suit dry, controlled spaces. Humidity is their weak point.
Corrosion on plated products almost always starts at a pore or a scratch. Moisture reaches the steel underneath, rust forms, and the rust lifts the plating from below. What looks like the plating peeling off is actually the steel corroding beneath it.
Three causes, in order of frequency: plating too thin, inadequate cleaning before plating, and damage in transit or use. Only the third is within the customer's control.
For a facility in a humid region, chrome should be specified only where the space is air-conditioned and dehumidified.
Rubber: mould rather than corrosion
Rubber does not rust, but sustained humidity encourages surface mould, particularly on natural rubber compounds. It is a hygiene and appearance problem more than a structural one, though it is difficult to remove once established.
Sewn goods: strength loss
Fabric and thread absorb moisture. Power bags, wall balls and Bulgarian bags can develop mould inside the cover, where it is not visible until the smell appears, and damp thread loses strength — which matters because stitching is where sewn goods fail first.
Urethane and TPU: the default choice
Neither material absorbs water, and neither supports mould growth. In a humid facility the durability advantage is large enough that the cost comparison against rubber changes completely.

- Is the facility air-conditioned and dehumidified? This single answer determines whether chrome is viable at all.
- How close to the sea? Salt air accelerates corrosion well beyond humidity alone.
- Is there a wet area nearby? Pool halls and shower-adjacent gyms are harsher than the outdoor climate suggests.
- Is any equipment stored outdoors or in an unconditioned store? Storage conditions often matter more than use conditions.
What to tell the end customer
Some simple habits materially extend service life in humid facilities:
- Wipe equipment dry after use — sweat is more corrosive than ambient humidity
- Inspect plated items on arrival for transit scratches, which become corrosion sites
- Store sewn goods off the floor with air circulation
- Keep storage areas ventilated; a closed store is worse than an open gym floor
The commercial point
Specifying chrome into a humid facility to save budget produces corrosion within a year and a complaint that lands on the distributor, not the factory. Recommending urethane or TPU costs more at quotation and less over the life of the account.
